Alan Savela
My name is Alan Savela, and I am 70 years old. I have been having problems with both of my knees since at least 2009. In 2009 in Michigan I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee for a torn meniscus and things settled down for awhile. Although my right knee still presented some problems, I chose not to do anything at the time.
In mid-summer 2011 my right knee was aching, giving out, and causing pain in my back. When I went to my primary care doctor, I could barely walk; I was in a lot of pain. He ordered an MRI, and referred me to Dr. Toman.
My first appointment with Dr. Toman was enlightening, and at the same time very reassuring. My wife and I viewed the X-rays with him, and he carefully explained the problems he saw: arthritic damage, and bone-on-bone rubbing with a grossly lacerated meniscus. Dr. Toman recommended Total Knee Replacement surgery to which we agreed. He got things moving and we set up a tentative surgery date. Dr. Toman recommended, and we agreed, that he use a computer-aided alignment tool to ensure that my leg was properly aligned. It worked beautifully. Few insurances cover the cost of this tools usage–approximately $300, so persons considering this surgery are advised by Dr. Toman that this is likely to be an out-of-pocket expense.
On January 24, 2012, I had the surgery at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte. The doctors, nurses, and staff could not have been more supportive. Dr. Toman was very attentive and made sure that I was not having ANY pain or discomfort.
Dr. Toman also recommended using the Otto Bock constant motion machine, which I used frequently each day, both in hospital and then when I came home. He also ordered home nursing and physical therapy. The nurses and therapist came each day performing their work efficiently and comfortingly.
Also ordered was Physical Therapy at Fitness Quest, Bobcat Trail, North Port. My flexion and range of motion are excellent.
It has now been three months since the surgery. I can walk without assistance. I have had some discomfort in my right hip as it adjusts to the new knee and my new gait. Dr. Toman was able to relieve the discomfort with a painless cortisone shot in my hip joint. He reassured me that this was a normal part of the recovery. I am able to sleep through the night without any pain or discomfort.
Dr. Toman is a very capable, talented, energetic, and reassuring doctor. I have no reservations about recommending him. My wife and I think he is great!
